Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. gets brutally honest on early-season struggles
San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. offered a candid assessment of his early-season rhythm after Wednesday’s 5–4 loss to the Chicago Cubs, acknowledging frustration while keeping the team’s broader goals in perspective.
Tatis finished 0-for-2 but reached base twice and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, cutting Chicago’s lead and giving San Diego a chance late. The Padres could not complete the comeback, though, as missed opportunities shaped the outcome.
The Padres entered the game with momentum and a strong 19–11 record, but their offense struggled to take advantage of scoring opportunities. The team went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, a costly issue in a one-run game and another sign of the inconsistency that has surfaced at times despite the club’s overall success.
Foul Territory TV’s Marty Caswell shared Tatis’ reaction on X, formerly Twitter, as the Padres star reflected on his slow start and the team’s offensive approach early in the 2026 season.
“Been close for a while. It’s just a sacrifice fly.”

“To want to go all the way and to perform in this long marathon, you need a whole team to win ball games.”
Tatis’ comments reflected both personal frustration and a team-first mindset. While his slow start has drawn attention, he is batting .250 with 28 hits, 13 RBIs, and 11 runs scored through 30 games this season. Still, he emphasized that San Diego’s success depends on more than one player finding a rhythm, with the Padres needing consistent production across the lineup to convert close games into wins.
Despite the loss, the Padres remain firmly positioned near the top of the NL West, just 0.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Still, Wednesday’s result showed how narrow margins can define April games, especially when late scoring chances go unused.
As the season develops, the focus for Tatis and the Padres remains on being consistent. San Diego believes its lineup has enough talent to produce over time, and Tatis continues working through his early struggles while keeping the bigger picture in mind.
