Oliver Glasner admits Marc Guehi transfer could happen as Premier League club plot January swoop

Oliver Glasner says Marc Guehi will leave Crystal Palace in January if Man City come in with a big enough offer.

talkSPORT understands City are considering a move for the Crystal Palace defender this month.

Pep Guardiola’s side are in the market for defensive reinforcements after Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias sustained injuries in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday.

Dias will be out for up to six weeks while Gvardiol’s season could be over with a broken leg.

The pair join fellow centre-back John Stones on the treatment table at the Etihad, leaving Guardiola short of options.

And Guehi, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is a leading option to help plug the gap.

It is understood Palace are open to a mid-season sale knowing Guehi will walk for free in June.

“If a player feels too good for a club, it is better to sell him, and if a player is not good enough for a club, you also have to sell him,” Glasner said. “To get the best out of your squad, it must be a match.”

Asked whether Guehi and City are a potential ‘match’, Glasner said: “It could be. I’m not so naive as not to know that if a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.”

But Guehi is believed to be content to remain at Palace for the rest of the campaign.

The 25-year-old is understood to view the consistent game time he receives at Palace as giving him a strong chance to start for England at the 2026 World Cup.

Along with City, the likes of Bayern, Real Madrid and Liverpool hold an interest in the Englishman.

Liverpool came closest to signing Guehi on deadline day last summer, but Palace pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute.

Barcelona were another team who discussed Guehi as a potential transfer target but opted not to proceed due to the defender’s wage demands.

Glasner added: “Nothing in life is one-dimensional. Let’s say you have a nice car but you need money because it’s cold and a window [at home] is broken, and somebody offers you crazy money for your car. You say, ‘No, I don’t want to sell my car. I love my car. But I don’t want to freeze.’ Then you say, ‘If I can get the window and even a new roof, you can have the car. But I would like to keep it.’

“It’s the same with Marc. Everybody wants him to play for Crystal Palace, sign a new contract and stay here for ever.

“On the other side, the contract ends this summer and if somebody is coming and you are freezing, there will be a moment when the club says, ‘Now the financial issue is more important than the sporting issue and we have to do it.

“There will be a threshold where if Marc says he wants to leave and the money is above the threshold, it will happen.”

Though Glasner would not reveal how much Palace would be demanding.

“The money was not above the threshold,” he said of Guehi’s collapsed move to Liverpool.

“Maybe it was close. If somebody had offered £80m for Marc and Marc said he wanted to go, then Marc wouldn’t be a Crystal Palace player.”

Given he is out of contract in the summer, Guehi is eligible to sign a pre-agreement with a club outside of England in January, which could give Bayern and Madrid a boost in their pursuit.

The 25-year-old joined Palace in July 2021 from Chelsea after a successful loan stint in the Championship with Swansea City.

Guehi has gone on to become a rock at the back for Palace, with his calmness and poise at the back helping him to become an established England international.

Since his arrival at Selhurst Park, Guehi has made 186 appearances across all competitions for Palace.

He also skippered the club to a stunning FA Cup victory last season as Palace beat City in the final, thus securing a European berth.

The FA Cup win marked Palace’s first-ever major trophy.

Palace have already prepared for Guehi’s eventual exit having signed Jaydee Canvot last summer for £23m.

The 19-year-old joined from Toulouse, where he established himself as a regular starter halfway through the 2024/25 season.

Palace’s capture of Canvot represented somewhat of a coup given Aston Villa had a bid for the French talent rejected.
