Now Patrick Mahomes understands why Travis Kelce was so mad at Andy Reid after worst game of career
Even when Patrick Mahomes only played one game as a rookie, he still made the NFL playoffs as Alex Smith’s understudy.
It’s been eight years and eight postseason trips for the heir to Tom Brady.

But now it’s 2025 and Showtime is finally cracking on stage.
Mahomes set a new low on Sunday
C.J. Stroud, DeMeco Ryans and the defense-first Houston Texans are on the rise again, thanks to five consecutive wins and a 20-10 humbling of Kansas City on Sunday Night Football.
The Chiefs are 6-7, which is a black hole when your entire career has been defined by annual playoff appearances, AFC Championship games, Super Bowls, MVPs and a modern football dynasty.
“You’re getting late in the season. You’re not going to get these opportunities back,” Mahomes said.
“That’s a good football team, but we had chances and we didn’t execute at the right time to win it.”
Those words underscore the worst statistical game of Mahomes’ career, which saw the three-time Super Bowl MVP throw three interceptions and only complete 14-of-33 passes for 160 yards.
While Mahomes again emphasized that the Chiefs are running out of time in 2025, longtime head coach Andy Reid assigned the blame for Kansas City’s nationally televised failure.
“I was wrong in hindsight. I was wrong,” said Reid, after a failed fourth-down conversion attempt at the Chiefs’ 31-yard line.
“We’ve been pretty good on fourth downs. I messed that one up.”
For years, Reid was praised for his offensive creativity.

Fans question Big Red after ‘revenge tour’ falls flat
From 2017-22, the Chiefs produced one of the most explosive attacks in the NFL, which forced opposing coaches to enter games knowing that putting up 30 points against Kansas City wouldn’t be enough.
Yet these Chiefs are 1-4 in their last five games, while averaging just 20 points a contest.
What was supposed to be a ‘revenge tour’ for Mahomes has become a referendum on the 67-year-old Reid, who’s considered retirement during recent seasons and is now simply being outcoached week after week.
“I hate to say it but … he isn’t evolving while every other team that is competitive is,” one fan tweeted.
“He will not be fired. Best thing is to make him retire,” a second fan posted.
Mahomes hasn’t displayed a full meltdown vs Reid on national TV.
NFL's Greatest......
Ranking the top 10......
Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?
Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?
Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and more
Tight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?
But it’s worth remembering Kelce’s public frustration in recent years, which mostly stemmed from wanting to be more involved in the Chiefs’ offense.
On Sunday, C.J. Stroud was better than Mahomes, while Kelce was held to one catch for eight yards.
Ranking the greatest QBs in NFL history
10. Patrick Mahomes
While the 30-year-old Mahomes is technically young in NFL years, he’s already in the top echelon of QBs when it comes to Super Bowl rings.
Mahomes has three world championship trophies and his wins have been unbelievable, including electric thrillers and comeback victories.
Not bad for a former Texas Tech prospect who ran a slow 40-yard dash at the combine and now jokingly begs the NFL to stop showing his video.
Throw in the fact that Mahomes has changed how the NFL is played at the QB position, and he’s football’s version of Stephen Curry.

Mahomes’ season reached its nadir with embarrassing passer rating vs Texans
Mahomes’ 19.8 passer rating was also embarrassing — it was the lowest of his career and 135 points off his peak of 154.8 during a 42-37 road win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 16, 2018.
Before Sunday, Mahomes’ previous low in passer rating was 44.4 during a 28-18 road win over the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.
His 19.8 rating vs the Texans was almost 25 points off that number and captured the new low that the Chiefs are facing.
There’s no doubt that Mahomes hasn’t been the same QB the last two seasons, and the two-time NFL MVP blamed himself after the Chiefs were blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
“I feel like I didn’t play to my standard, especially the struggles that I had early in the season,” Mahomes said.
“There’s things that I have to get better at, and they kind of showed today on the biggest stage.”
The Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys and Texans have exposed Reid’s Chiefs this season.
Mahomes is too talented to post a 19.8 rating when he’s supposed to be the next Brady.
The Chiefs’ QB has every right to be furious with the state of his team’s offense — and the lack of winning answers arriving weekly from Reid.
