‘No brainer’ – Chelsea told to appoint rival Premier League manager over Liam Rosenior

Chelsea have been urged to appoint a ‘proven’ Premier League manager as Enzo Maresca’s replacement.

The Italian left Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Day after 18 months in charge.

During that time, he won the Conference League and Club World Cup with the Blues.

However, Maresca departed following Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, which leaves Chelsea fifth in the table.

Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior is the preferred candidate to succeed him in the dugout, talkSPORT understands.

The 41-year-old has impressed the club’s hierarchy during his time in France managing the fellow BlueCo-owned outfit.

Rosenior guided Strasbourg to a seventh place finish in Ligue 1 last season to secure European qualification.

However, Chelsea have been warned his appointment could be a ‘massive risk’ due to his lack of Premier League experience.

Who should Chelsea appoint?

Instead, talkSPORT’s Jason Cundy and Jermaine Pennant believe Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner should be appointed.

The Austrian is already expected to leave Selhurst Park when his contract expires at the end of the season after failing to sign a new deal.

Discussing the club’s managerial hunt on The Sports Bar, Cundy explained: “Oliver Glasner is the one I would go for.

“That’s where I would go. He has proven himself to be an excellent manager.

“Chelsea are not going to go out and poach the best manager. For example, we’re not going to get Pep (Guardiola).

“But I think, when you look at what Glasner has done at Crystal Palace, where he has taken them, where they have been.

“He’s had his own restrictions, by the way. He’s had his own problems at the football club for a lack of investment.”

Pennant added: “He’s lost a lot of his key players to numerous teams and he still seems to be able to get the job done.

“Premier League proven goes a long way (when) choosing a manager, it’s huge.

“If you’ve got a manager who can do it in the Premier League, year after year, especially with one hand kind of tied behind your back at Palace, I think it’s a no-brainer.

“It’s not a risk, as in Liam Rosenior could be a massive risk and if you get managers wrong your club can be in freefall.”

Glasner won both the FA Cup and Community Shield with Palace in 2025, with the former their first-ever major trophy.

The Wembley triumph also secured European football for the first time in the club’s history.

However, he has been vocal about his frustrations since lifting the trophy, notably after a lack of support in the summer transfer window.

As a result, Glasner is expected to leave the club at the end of the current campaign.

Palace have already started the process of looking for his replacement ahead of next season.
