NFL insider calls for broadcast change as ‘legendary’ 49ers call goes viral with Super Bowl winner’s approval
It was a call that sent shockwaves around the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers pulled off an epic upset over the Philadelphia Eagles on the road to eliminate the reigning Super Bowl champions from the NFL playoffs.

Despite their plethora of injuries that ruled out the likes of defensive stalwarts Nick Bosa and Fred Warner earlier on in the season, and quarterback Brock Purdy for eight games, the Niners somehow finished with a 12-5 record.
As the No. 6 seed, San Francisco were faced with a tough trip on the road against the reigning champions.
But head coach Kyle Shanahan got in his play-calling bag to stun the Eagles, using a whole host of trickery to stall them before they could take flight.
In the fourth quarter, and trailing 16-10, the Niners opted for the trick play which saw wide receiver Jauan Jennings flip a 29-yard touchdown pass to ‘one-of-one’ superstar running back Christian McCaffrey to tie the game.
With the Eagles reclaiming the lead following a successful field goal from kicker Jake Elliott, the Niners – who had lost George Kittle to a torn Achilles in the first quarter – had one more shot at the upset.
Purdy marched his team down the field on a 10 play, 66 yard drive capped off with McCaffrey’s second receiving score of the game, which proved to be the winning play as the Eagles couldn’t convert on a 4th-and-11.
On hand to call the game-winning play that saw the 49ers punch their ticket to the divisional round was talkSPORT’s very own Will Gavin.
The British play-by-play commentator, who was calling the game live from Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, went viral on social media due to his enthusiastic – and highly detailed – call of McCaffrey’s second touchdown of the contest.
“I would like to request this alternate broadcast for all NFL games moving forward. Thank you.

,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“This is actually fantastic,” Fox Sports 1 analyst Rachel Nichols added.

Gavin’s expert call on the mic even attracted the attention of Seattle Seahawks and 49ers legend Richard Sherman.
“This made me smile. Good call and I love the energy,” Sherman wrote, before responding to Gavin directly where he said, “Your doing a great job brother! Keep killing it!”
Gavin has gone viral several times this season, which has seen Kay Adams dedicate a segment of her Up and Adams Show to the play-by-play announcer, which even featured a shoutout from all-time great NFL tight end, Rob Gronkowski.
“The response has been unbelievable,” Gavin told talkSPORT when asked about how he feels about the outpouring of response from around the NFL.
Speaking on Sherman specifically, Gavin added,”The idea that a player that I idolized and enjoyed watching so much took some joy from a British guy nerding out about American football, it’s just surreal to me.”
Fans call for Gavin to call nationally televised games
But it wasn’t just NFL media figures who were sending their plaudits to the Brit.

NFL fans all over the world were marveling at Gavin’s calls.
“That man needs to be calling any and all NFL games. Fantastic!,” one fan posted to X, as another one added, “Yea this just got me fired up.”
“Holy c*** I’ve been watching football all my life and I just realized I’ve never watched it correctly

,” a second wrote.
“Can we draft him is that an option?” another fan questioned.
“We need this energy in the games man. Give us this broadcast,” a third added which saw many agree with another commenting, “1000%, all of our regular broadcasters have zero emotion, dull and boring.”
Gavin even saw one fan call for him to replace 81-year-old Al Michaels who is Amazon Prime‘s Thursday Night Football play-by-play commentator, as well as that of Cris Collinsworth.

Fans who want to tune into Gavin’s play-calling are in luck.
As the 49ers gear up to take on the Seahawks in the NFC Divisional Round on Sunday as they continue their bid to reach a home Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium, Gavin will be on the call for talkSPORT live from Lumen Field in Seattle.
This broadcast will stream live on talkSPORT USA’s YouTube channel, which can be found here, at 5p.m. PST.
