Newcastle United vs Sunderland predictions and betting tips – Arch-rivals renew hostilities
Newcastle United were dumped out of the Champions League in midweek, but there is no time for them to feel sorry for themselves with a Tyne-Wear derby on the horizon.
Sunderland won the first meeting between these two teams earlier in the campaign. Can they do the double here, or will Newcastle avenge that loss at the Stadium of Light?

Newcastle United vs Sunderland predictions
In the end, it was all too much for Newcastle United.
After 135 minutes of their two-legged Champions League last-16 tie against Barcelona, Eddie Howe’s side were in contention for a place in the quarter-finals.
Having drawn 1-1 at St James’ Park last week, Newcastle went in at the interval 3-2 down at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.
The Magpies had twice pegged back their hosts in a thrilling first half, only for Lamine Yamal to put Barca back ahead in stoppage time.
Still, Newcastle had caused their illustrious opponents real problems in the opening period, and Howe would not have been too displeased with the state of play going into the second half.
It did not take long for that to change. Barcelona came roaring out of the blocks after the restart, scoring three times within 16 minutes to establish a commanding 6-2 lead on the night.
The situation soon got even worse for Newcastle, as Raphinha scored Barcelona’s seventh in the 72nd minute. For all that they had matched the Blaugrana in the first half, Newcastle were blown away by them in the second.
Howe tried to focus on the positives in his post-match media duties, arguing that the scoreline did not reflect his team’s displays across the two legs, and stating that his team are desperate to be regulars at Europe’s top table.
The Champions League might be where Newcastle want to be, but they will almost certainly be absent from the competition next term given the seven-point gap to the top five.
That does not mean Newcastle will be short of motivation on Sunday. Their arch-rivals Sunderland are in town, which means there is no opportunity for the Magpies to feel sorry for themselves after that shellacking in Catalonia.
“Now, it’s all about Sunderland,” Howe said on Wednesday. “It’s not about today. It’s about learning from today, evolving and changing if we need to.
“But it’s about the next game and making sure we’re mentally and physically ready for what’s going to be a huge game for us and the whole city.
“I think that’s quite a good game for us to go straight into because there’s no time for any other thought now. It’s huge. There’s no point talking about it though, we’ve just got to play. We’ve got to play like our lives depend on it.”
Newcastle United vs Sunderland betting tips
Newcastle United host Sunderland in the latest edition of the Tyne-Wear derby.
Newcastle to triumph
Sunderland won the reverse fixture 1-0 at the Stadium of Light earlier in the season, a result which lifted them up to eighth.
The Black Cats climbed as high as sixth soon after, but their form has tailed off over the last few months.
Indeed, since that defeat of their chief adversaries in the middle of December, Regis Le Bris’ side have won just three of 14 top-flight matches.
Sunderland have run out of steam, while only three teams have collected fewer points away from home. Newcastle should win this one.

Tight encounter in store
It is fair to say the December game between these two teams was an attritional affair.
Sunderland and Newcastle United mustered up a combined three shots on target, while their collective xG was just 0.54.
We should see a little more action in and around the two penalty areas this time, but anyone hoping for a high-scoring thriller is likely to be disappointed.
Bear in mind, too, that there have been two goals or fewer in six of Sunderland’s last seven matches in all competitions.

Gordon to make mark?
After an indifferent start to the Premier League season, Anthony Gordon has rediscovered his form of late.
Since the turn of the year, he has had a direct hand in 11 of the goals Newcastle United have scored in the top flight and the Champions League.
Gordon is at his most dangerous in transition when he has space to run into. Sunderland will sit deep in a bid to deny him what he wants.
But Gordon has grown more intelligent over the last couple of years, and he is by no means a one-trick pony. The England international has what it takes to get his name on the scoresheet in the derby.
