NCAA basketball rumors: Kansas, Tennessee competing to land March Madness star
Every year, March Madness makes a number of big-time players at small schools into household names. This year was no different, with a number of first-round upsets making new stars all over the country.
One of those stars was VCU guard Terrence Hill Jr. Hill scored 34 points in a first-round upset as the 11th-seeded Rams rallied from a 19-point deficit to stun No. 6 seed North Carolina in overtime. Now, Hill is in the transfer portal and appears poised to be bringing that scoring prowess to a high-major program next season.
As of now, Hill isn’t scheduled to visit both Kansas and Tennessee in the coming days as both schools battle for one of the most electric guards on the market, according to Joe Tipton of On3 Sports.
“The 6-foot-3 sophomore is set to visit Kansas early next week and then is scheduled to make a trip to Tennessee on Wednesday,” Tipton wrote. “Both schools are building positive momentum with Hill.”
Hill is very ball-dominant when he is on the floor, but he proved in the win over North Carolina that he can score at all three levels and would be a dynamic addition to any backcourt at the high-major level. Hill shot 13-for-23 in the upset win and 7-for-10 on 3-pointers.
For the season, Hill averaged 15 points per game despite making just two starts for a VCU squad that was very deep in the backcourt, so much so that the Rams were able to secure at at-large bid out of the A-10.
Kansas and Tennessee are both losing their best scorers in the backcourt, so it’s no surprise to see them both pushing to land Hill in the portal. Kansas will be losing Darryn Peterson to the NBA Draft while Tennessee is going to be without Ja’Kobi Gillespie next season.
Hill has the skills to fill some of the void in scoring for both of those programs as they look to improve on their own NCAA Tournament results, so it will be fascinating to see how his recruitment plays out.
