Nathan Redmond returns to football at Championship club after two-month search

Blackburn Rovers have announced the signing of Nathan Redmond on a free for the final seven games of the Championship season.

Redmond, who left Sheffield Wednesday in January, has signed an initial short-term deal at Ewood Park to feature in the run-in.

The 32-year-old only played 132 minutes with the Owls earlier this campaign, featuring only seven times and making no starts.

However, after a two-month search for a new club, he’s joined a Championship rival also towards the bottom of the table.

Blackburn are currently sitting 19th in the second-tier standings and just four points above the relegation zone.

The appointment of Michael O’Neill helped boost their survival chances and he’s only lost three of eight matches in charge so far.

O’Neill, who had his World Cup hopes with Northern Ireland in his shared international role quashed on Thursday night, will now hope that Redmond can help his club side.

Speaking after his transfer was announced, the one-cap England international said: “I’m delighted to be here.

“Delighted to be given the opportunity, I want to fully immerse myself here so I understand what this club means to people.

“I’m also just excited to get going, being back in training, the joys of day-to-day training. I’m excited to get into some gameday squads.”

Redmond has been added to Blackburn’s 25-man squad for the rest of the campaign after slots opened up due to injuries.

He could make his debut on Friday, April 3, as they travel to take on former club Birmingham City in a crucial clash.

Redmond’s latest club

The veteran winger has 276 Premier League appearances to his name, along with over 100 games played in the Championship.

So, he is sure to bring an incredible amount of experience to the Blackburn squad for the final few games of the season.

Redmond started his career at Birmingham in 2010 after spending multiple years in the club’s academy.

A move to Norwich City came in 2013 and he went on to spend three years at Carrow Road before joining Southampton.

And with the Saints, he claimed his sole England cap and played 232 games, scoring 30 goals and assisting 27.

He then departed in 2022, and since then, Redmond spent a year in Turkey with Besiktas before returning to England with Burnley, playing 18 times for the Clarets until his contract expired last year.

Blackburn’s run-in

Blackburn find themselves in real danger of relegation to League One this season, sitting four points above the bottom three.

They are battling alongside Leicester City, Oxford, Portsmouth, and West Brom for survival in the Championship.

And they face two of them in their final seven games.

Birmingham come up next on Good Friday, but they then host West Brom on April 6 before travelling to Stoke on April 11.

Three tough matches then follow with Coventry City, Sheffield United and Southampton standing in their way.

On the final day of the season, Blackburn then take on Leicester, which could turn out to be a relegation decider.
