Monaco vs PSG predictions and betting tips – All-French Champions League tie

Neither Monaco nor Paris Saint-Germain were able to finish in the top eight of the Champions League league phase, setting up this all-French tie in the knockout play-offs.

PSG’s path to a second successive triumph has therefore been lengthened, but they should not look too far ahead. First they must take care of familiar opposition over two legs.

Monaco vs PSG predictions

Paris Saint-Germain know better than anyone that finishing outside the top eight of the Champions League league phase is not fatal to your chances of winning the competition.

PSG finished 15th in the 24-team standings last term. At one point it looked like they might even miss out on the play-offs. After six matches, PSG were in an elimination spot.

Yet despite their indifferent form in the first stage of the tournament, PSG ultimately came good when it mattered.

They demolished Brest, another fellow French team, 10-0 on aggregate in the play-offs. The emphatic nature of that triumph might actually have helped PSG going into the round of 16, where they dispatched Liverpool.

The rest is history. PSG went on to lift the trophy for the first time ever, ending their long quest for Champions League glory.

Once again, though, they did not have everything their own way in this season’s league phase. After starting with three consecutive victories, PSG only won one of their last five matches.

They lost at home to Bayern Munich and away to Sporting CP, as well as drawing with Athletic Bilbao and Newcastle United.

Their failure to beat Newcastle on matchday eight ensured Luis Enrique’s side missed out on a direct berth to the round of 16. To reach that stage, where Barcelona or Chelsea will be their opponents, Luis Enrique’s team must beat Monaco over two legs.

The club from the principality ended the league phase in 21st. They lost heavily to both Club Brugge (4-1) and Real Madrid (6-1), but at times Monaco proved difficult to beat, holding Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus to draws.

Monaco look to have turned a corner in Ligue 1 of late. A nightmare spell in which they lost seven out of eight games between the start of November and the middle of January has been followed by a four-match unbeaten streak. Incidentally, their sole success in that bleak run came against PSG.

So while Luis Enrique’s side are clear favourites to win this tie, they should not take anything for granted.

A 3-1 defeat by Rennes on Friday night illustrated once more that PSG are not invincible against French opposition. Indeed, with Lens going strong, the Parisians are by no means guaranteed to win the Ligue 1 title this season.

The Champions League remains their primary focus, so we will see if PSG raise their game on Tuesday.

Monaco face PSG on Tuesday night – will the defending champions come out on top?

PSG will be tested

While PSG lost 3-1 on Friday night, Monaco were victorious over Nantes by the same scoreline.

They will draw confidence not only from their recent unbeaten run, but from their 1-0 defeat of PSG earlier in the season.

Luis Enrique’s side have not looked entirely right defensively in some of their recent games. In four of their last six outings, PSG have conceded.

That gives Monaco hope, but Luis Enrique’s side boast such formidable firepower that they should be able to overcome this challenge even if they do not keep a clean sheet.

Tight first half?

Two-legged ties always change the dynamic of a game. With a second match still to come, PSG will not go for the kill from the first whistle here.

Even a draw on Tuesday would not be a bad outcome for the holders with a second leg at the Parc des Princes still to follow.

Monaco’s first objective will be to hang in the tie for as long as possible. They will not want PSG to be out of sight by the end of this match.

As such, we could see a tight first half at the Stade Louis II. Monaco have only been behind twice at the interval at home in Ligue 1 this campaign. PSG will have to be patient.

Dembele on target

Having now returned to full fitness following a spell out with injury, Ousmane Dembele has looked sharp over the last couple of weeks.

Dembele was on target in the loss to Rennes on Friday, before which he notched a brace as PSG thumped arch-rivals Marseille 5-0.

The Ballon D’or holder was inspirational as PSG swept all before them last season, and the French giants need a repeat performance from the forward in the months ahead.

Monaco will be well aware of the threat Dembele poses, but stopping him is a different matter altogether.
