Mitch Johnson fires back at social media haters in response to Game 4 collapse

The San Antonio Spurs’ Game 4 loss to the New York Knicks was officially the largest comeback in NBA Finals history. After being up 29 points, the Spurs were unable to hold on as the Knicks rallied back to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Following the loss, social media lit up with calls for drastic measures for the Spurs, but head coach Mitch Johnson was unfazed.

With the Spurs facing a must-win situation heading into Game 5 of the NBA Finals, Mitch Johnson acknowledged that he does not pay attention to outside opinions of the team, as per Zach Braziller of The New York Post.

“I don’t really get into social media,” Johnson said during a media availability session ahead of Game 5. “I’ve probably been fired 212 teams, and we’ve probably traded [De’Aaron] Fox 72 times … People have their opinions. I don’t care.”

Late game execution has plagued the Spurs throughout the NBA Finals. While they were able to hold on in Game 3, Games 2 and 4 came down to the Spurs inability to close out the fourth quarter.

But even so, the fact remains that this has been the team’s most successful year in quite some time. Johnson led the Spurs to their first 60-win season since the 2016-17. They reached the NBA Finals for the first time since the 2013-14 season.

The Spurs’ late game blunders are a trademark of a young, inexperienced team, which they are. Although there have been calls to potentially trade De’Aaron Fox amid his poor series, the one thing this Spurs team probably needs is experience. The Knicks have that experience having gone through playoff failures the past couple of seasons. On the Spurs’ side, this is their first postseason appearance in seven years.

Once they get experience under their belts, they’ll learn how to close out games.
