Missed Hundreds: Virat Kohli’s nervous 90s in ODI cricket
Virat Kohli has a staggering 53 centuries in ODI cricket, which is a world record. However, this number could have been greater had he not been dismissed several times in the 90s during his illustrious career.
On Sunday, January 11, Kohli was dismissed for 93 off 91 balls in the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. He narrowly missed out on scoring his 85th international century. This was the seventh time he was dismissed in the nervous 90s in ODI cricket in 309 matches and 297 innings. Interestingly, Kohli's idol Sachin Tendulkar has been dismissed the most number of times (18) in the 90s in ODI cricket.
In this article, let's take a look at the seven instances when Kohli was dismissed in the 90s in the 50-over format.
Missed Hundreds: Virat Kohli’s nervous 90s in ODI cricket
91 vs Bangladesh, 2010
A young Virat Kohli played a gem of an innings at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on January 7, 2010, against Bangladesh, helping the Indian team chase down a 297-run target quite comfortably. This was in a tri-nation tournament, also involving Sri Lanka. Apart from Kohli, MS Dhoni also played well, remaining unbeaten on 101 off 107 balls.
94 vs West Indies, 2011
A year later, Kohli was run out in a game against the West Indies in Kingston on June 16, 2011. The right-handed batter was looking in sublime touch, but a small mix-up ended his 104-ball stay at the crease. Kohli belted 10 boundaries in his superlative knock. India lost the match by seven wickets as the West Indies chased down a 252-run target with eight balls to spare.
99 vs West Indies, 2013
This was the only time Kohli departed one short of a three-figure score in ODI cricket. India and the West Indies clashed at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on November 24, 2013. The iconic batter faced 100 balls and hit nine boundaries during his glorious knock. However, the West Indies emerged victorious, tracking down a 289-run target with three balls and two wickets in the bank.
91 vs Australia, 2016
In Kohli's first match in 2016, he slammed a fantastic 91 off 97 balls against Australia at the WACA on January 12. Rohit Sharma had scored an unbeaten 171 in this fixture. The Asian giants posted 309/3 in their 50 overs, but Australia romped home with five wickets and four balls in hand. However, Kohli's knock against a strong Aussie bowling line-up was praised by fans and experts alike.
92 vs Australia, 2017
Kohli was dismissed in the 90s once again against Australia. However, this time, the game was played at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on September 21, 2017. Kohli top-scored for India with a 107-ball 92, belting eight boundaries before getting bowled by Nathan Coulter-Nile. India, however, won the match by 50 runs as Kuldeep Yadav bagged a hat-trick.
95 vs New Zealand, 2023
Kohli scored a remarkable 95 against New Zealand in a league-stage fixture in the 2023 ODI World Cup at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on October 22. The Delhi batter hit eight fours and two sixes in his knock, which lasted 104 balls. Thanks to his composed innings, India were able to chase a 275-run target in 48 overs with four wickets to spare.
93 vs New Zealand, 2026
Kohli entered the three-match ODI series against New Zealand on the back of five consecutive 50-plus scores in the format. The former India captain was proactive at the start of his innings at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara.
He stepped out to pacers and spinners alike and dispatched loose balls with ease. His 93-run knock off 91 balls set the foundation for India to chase down a 301-run target in 49 overs with four wickets remaining in the hut.
