Minnesota Timberwolves announcers make awkward apology 48hrs after ‘misleading’ comments

The Minnesota Timberwolves broadcasters on FanDuel apologized for on-air comments made towards a fan.

The awkward moment came during the Timberwolves’ win over the Washington Wizards on Sunday and was followed by an apology more than 48 hours later in Minnesota’s victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday.

The incident in question came when that the announcing pair of Alan Horton and Jim Petersen claimed that a woman took a jersey from Anthony Edwards that was meant for a child in the crowd.

Edwards is known for handing out his jerseys after almost every game and was at it again on Sunday.

“Hand it to that person over there, don’t keep it,” Horton said after the woman got the jersey.

“Is she just gonna stick that in her purse? Give it to the kid right behind you!” Petersen chimed in.

“The kid is obviously right behind you.”

Later that day, beat writer Jon Krawczynski explained why Edwards gave the woman that jersey.

“Ant just gave his jersey to a fan behind the bench. She’s wearing a Matilda shirt,” he posted on X.

Later on, footage also showed that Edwards had clearly spotted the woman and was aiming for her when he threw the jersey.

Inevitably, the two announcers faced a lot of backlash for criticising the woman who did nothing wrong.

So when they were back on the air Tuesday, they made their correction.

“We’d like to take a moment to apologize for something that happened in our last broadcast Sunday in Washington, D.C.,” Horton began.

“We made misleading comments towards a young fan that received a signed Anthony Edwards jersey toward the end of that game.

“We did not have full context, and later learned that young woman was in fact the intended recipient of that jersey.

“She did absolutely nothing wrong, and we apologize for bringing attention to it, and any distress that may have caused.”

Timberwolves breeze past the Heat

In the end, it’s likely the fan and the announcers went home happy, as along with clearing the air, the Timberwolves dominated the Miami Heat in a 122-94 win.

Edwards scored 26 points in what was Minnesota’s second win over Miami in four days.

Jayden McDaniels added 19 points while Rudy Gobert had 13 points and 17 rebounds, and Julius Randle had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Up next for the Timberwolves is back-to-back games against the Cleveland Cavaliers, beginning on Thursday.
