Max Dowman breaks 21-year Premier League record to send Arsenal ten points clear in Premier League title race

Max Dowman has become the Premier League’s youngest ever goalscorer as he helped fire Arsenal to a 2-0 win over Everton.

The Gunners looked to be heading for a disappointing draw until Mikel Arteta decided to throw on the Hale End graduate in the 75th minute.

It was Dowman who supplied the cross that led to fellow substitute Viktor Gyokeres breaking the deadlock in the 89th minute.

His whipped in delivery from the right flank was met by Piero Hincapie, with the ball falling to Gyokeres three yards out with the goal at his mercy.

Everton pressed for a late equaliser, with the Toffees given a corner deep in stoppage time.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford went up, but Arsenal scrambled the ball away, with Dowman leading the charge from the edge of the area,

The teenager skipped past Vitalii Mykolenko, before gloriously side-stepping past Kieran Dewsbury-Hall on the halfway line – sending the Everton star to the deck.

And from there, he had the whole length of the half at his mercy, as he walked the ball to the penalty box before slotting home into an empty net to spark jubilant scenes in the home end.

Teenage dreams

Ages just 16 years and 73 days old, he has become the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.

James Vaughan had been the record holder having scored at the age of 16 years and 270 days for Everton against Crystal Palace in April 2005.

And unsurprisingly, Dowman has become Arsenal’s youngest goalscorer in history.

That honour belonged to Cesc Fabregas, with the Spaniard 16 years and 212 days old when he fired in against Wolves in the League Cup in December 2003.

Dowman’s goal means he has also helped create further Arsenal history.

With both his and Gyokeres’ goals coming from the bench, it means that Arsenal have scored 22 times through substitutes this term.

Never had the club scored more from substitutes in a single season.

Arsenal’s victory has extended their lead over Manchester City to ten points.

Though the Citizens, who have two games in hand, can cut the gap with Pep Guardiola‘s men to face West Ham at 8pm on Saturday night – live on talKSPORT.

In an incredible stat, Arsenal have achieved more points this season [70] than what bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur have managed across the past two campaigns [67].

Though Arsenal have been dealt a blow with Jurrien Timber going off injured in the first half – just eight days before the Carabao Cup final.

Arteta was in a jovial mood following the full-time whistle, as he waxed lyrical over Dowman’s maturity.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s natural for him. He doesn’t feel the pressure – that’s the best thing.

“He does what he feels and when you have such a talent, I’m sure good things are going to happen.

Regarding the title race, Arteta remarked: “Job done from our side.

“The performance on every level was very good.

“We are playing every three days and the players deserve a lot of credit.

“We want to create memories and moments and I’m sure for many years, people that were in the stadium today will say, ‘I was at the Emirates when that kid at 16 scored that goal in such an important moment of the season.'”
