Matt Holliday provides key injury update for Orioles’ Jackson Holliday

After spending last week scrapping their way back to .500, the Baltimore Orioles have fallen into a slump over the last few days. They escaped a no-hitter in the ninth inning on Thursday but still picked up a 4-2 loss versus Parker Messick and the Cleveland Guardians, falling to 9-10 on the season. This club could use some reinforcements. Fans are eagerly waiting for Jackson Holliday to make his season debut, as is his father.

Four-time Silver Slugger and seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday shared an injury update on his 22-year-old son, who underwent surgery for a fractured hook in his right hamate bone back in February. The retired outfielder confirmed that disaster has been avoided despite Holliday recently being shut down due to wrist soreness.

“He went back to Baltimore and got some reassurance that everything was fine,” Matt Holliday told the “Cardinal Territory” podcast. “{He’s} taking some anti-inflammatories and he’s going to go back on rehab… He’s working his way back. Obviously don’t want to rush it. Make sure he feels strong and ready.

“There’s just little hiccups here and there, but he’s close and feeling good. I just talked to him a few minutes ago and I think he’s getting excited about where he’s at.”

The 2011 World Series champion and 2007 National League Championship Series MVP says Jackson Holliday sustained wrist inflammation by compensating too much for the injured side, which forced the Orioles to hit the pause button. He is optimistic, however, and expects the No. 1 pick in the 2022 MLB Draft to resume his rehab assignment and be reevaluated at some point in the near future. Baltimore could certainly use a healthy and impactful Holliday in its lineup.

Ryan Mountcastle suffered a broken foot last weekend and joined Jordan Westburg on the 60-day injured list, Adley Rutschman is dealing with an ankle issue, Tyler O’Neill has a concussion and fellow position player Heston Kjerstad is recovering from a hamstring strain. The Orioles, much like last year, are being decimated by injuries.

Holliday will try to get right and provide meaningful production for this adversity-ridden ballclub. The young infielder batted .242 with 17 home runs, a .314 on-base percentage, .375 slugging percentage and .690 OPS in 149 games last season, so he could use as many reps as possible.
