Matt Fitzpatrick caps off Players finish with Valspar win
Matt Fitzpatrick took things down to the wire at the Players Championship against Cameron Young, but unfortunately an errant tee shot on 18 saw matters slip through his fingers.
Such was not the case this past week at the Valspar Championship.
Fitzpatrick birdied 18 this time around and in the process won the Valspar Championship for his third career PGA Tour victory. He finished 11-under for the week and edged out David Lipsky (-10) and Jordan Smith (-9) to take home the title.
What is particularly amazing is that prior to Sunday, Fitzpatrick had never birdied 18 at Innsbrook in 11 previous rounds. No time like the present.
It has been an impressive season for Fitzpatrick as noted. The former U.S. Open winner seems to be rounding into proper form with Augusta just around the corner.
Interestingly, Fitzpatrick became the first major champion to win the Valspar specifically in a decade. The last time in which a major winner took home the Valspar title was Charl Schwartzel back in 2016.
