Marlins’ Pete Fairbanks lands on IL after suffering injury vs. Dodgers

The Miami Marlins are going to be without their closer, as Pete Fairbanks was placed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday. However, it sounds like there is a chance he could be out for longer than the initial 15 days.

Reports indicate that the 32-year-old right-hander is dealing with nerve irritation he suffered during Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com. The Marlins hope Fairbanks only has to be on the IL for 15 days, but nerve issues can be finicky.

Pete Fairbanks is going on the IL with nerve irritation. Marlins hope it’s just the 15 days,” reported De Nicola.

Fairbanks was removed early in the bottom of the ninth inning after seemingly suffering an injury after just 0.1 innings pitched. While on the mound, the eight-year veteran allowed one hit and three walks. The Marlins ended up replacing him with Tyler Phillips, who ended up allowing a walk-off two-run single to Dodgers outfielder Kyle Tucker.

For now, it’s not entirely clear who will replace Pete Fairbanks in the bullpen with him out for at least the next 15 days. Manager Clayton McCullough will likely continue utilizing a committee approach, as the Marlins have used Fairbanks, along with several other players in the bullpen, to help close games early on this season.

Either way, the trip to the IL might be a beneficial break for Fairbanks. It’s been a tough start for him in his first year with the Marlins. In 10 game appearances, Fairbanks owns a 10.00 ERA and 1.444 WHIP while recording 13 strikeouts and five saves.
