Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh’s custom ‘Big Dumper’ cup leaves Jeff Passan in shambles

The Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is not off to the best start to the season. He is hitting just .205 with seven home runs, but the man affectionately known as The Big Dumper is still one of the biggest star catchers in the majors.

Now, Raleigh is talking about the life of being a catcher, including protective equipment, with Jeff Passan on Sources Tell Jeff Passan.

“You learned to deal with getting hit in the balls?” Passan asked through a laugh.

“No, well. Not that one, but the other ones… You take a few minutes. I try not to, like, hold the game up too much, but when you get hit in certain areas, you deserve to take a minute or two,” Raleigh responded.

Passan then continued the interview, confirming that Raleigh wears a cup, and leading to a shocking answer.

“Yeah, you have to [wear a cup]. Every catcher has to. That’s like rule number one as a catcher,” the Mariners backstop responded. “This company made a really nice customized cup, so it’s got ‘Big Dumper’ on it. It’s got the trident on it. It’s pretty cool.”

The fact that Raleigh has a cup that says “Big Dumper” on it seemed to shock Passan. Raleigh went on to explain the company and cup, as Passan held back laughter. Then, Passan took the questioning to the next level.

“Do you have to get measured, like with ABS? Where they measure your height? You know, a little measurement down there as well?” Passan added while still trying to control laughter.

Apparently, custom measurements of the area were not needed. As for the cup itself, while it is cool he has a custom piece of equipment, no one will care as long as he returns to hitting well. If he can get back to his quality hitting, it will help the Mariners tremendously. The Mariners are 14-16 currently, which is two games back in the AL West. Raleigh, with his custom protective equipment, and the Mariners return to the field on Tuesday in game two against the Minnesota Twins.
