Manchester United make transfer decision on talented midfielder

Manchester United have cut short Toby Collyer’s loan at West Bromwich Albion.

According to The Athletic, Collyer is already back at Carrington to undergo treatment on a calf injury.

The report adds Collyer’s injury is set to keep him sidelined for approximately eight weeks.

But once the 21-year-old returns to full fitness, he will remain at Old Trafford rather than return to the Baggies.

Collyer joined West Brom on a season-long loan in August.

However, the move did not work out as planned for all parties.

Collyer had to wait until his eighth match to earn a starting berth for Ryan Mason‘s side, where he lasted 79 minutes in a 3-0 loss to Millwall.

Prior to that, Collyer had been reduced to cameo appearances off the bench, with only one lasting longer than 17 minutes.

Despite a loss in his first start, Collyer retained his position in the following match as he registered an assist for the Baggies in a 2-1 win over Preston North End.

His momentum was halted when he picked up a muscle injury in October that sidelined him for four games, before he returned on November 8 for a 2-1 win over Oxford United.

But Collyer was back on the treatment table just two games later when he was forced off with an injury just 11 minutes into a 1-1 draw against Birmingham City on November 26.

It proved to be the last time Collyer pulled on a Baggies shirt.

Although Collyer is back at United, the report adds he could be sent out on loan again once he recovers as a number of Championship sides retain an interest.

However, Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim could opt to keep the 21-year-old at Old Trafford should midfielder Kobbie Mainoo depart in January.

At present, talkSPORT understands the United board have no intention of selling Mainoo in the winter window.

However, there is a chance the talented midfielder, who has 10 England caps to his name, could depart on loan.

Napoli, where ex-United midfielder Scott McTominay has taken his game to a whole new level, are among the clubs interested in a move for Mainoo.

And if that eventuates, it could open the door for Collyer to add to his 13 appearances for United.

Collyer made his Premier League debut for the Red Devils on September 1 in 2024, where he came on at half-time in a 3-0 loss to Liverpool.

He has gone on to feature in six league fixtures for United as well as four Europa League games, two of which he started.
