Man United legend could join Darren Fletcher on touchline for Burnley clash

Darren Fletcher could be joined on the touchline at Burnley on Wednesday by former Manchester United teammate Jonny Evans, talkSPORT understands.

The Red Devils head to Turf Moor following a turbulent couple of days which saw Ruben Amorim relieved of his duties as United head coach.

The Portuguese boss was swiftly replaced by Fletcher, who has taken up the role of caretaker manager.

Fletcher is no stranger to senior roles at Old Trafford having been appointed as technical director before being replaced by Jason Wilcox in 2024.

The Scot went on to coach the club’s Under-18s side last summer before being tasked with succeeding Amorim in the interim.

It is unknown just how long Fletcher will be handed the reins at Manchester United but it appears that he could be getting the band back together ahead of Wednesday’s clash.

A long-standing bromance

Fletcher and Evans were both academy graduates under Alex Ferguson who went on to forge solid careers with the club.

The duo have remained side by side for much of their careers and both left Old Trafford in 2015 after the arrival of Louis van Gaal.

It led to both players signing for West Bromwich Albion where they went on to continue their close personal and professional relationships.

While Fletcher called time on his career in 2019, Evans enjoyed an impressive spell of form with Leicester where he went on to help the Foxes lift the FA Cup.

But there was still time for an Old Trafford swansong as the Northern Ireland international returned to Manchester United for a second spell in 2023 before hanging up his boots in 2025.

Who’s in the frame?

Meanwhile, another familiar face in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed an interest in returning to the Old Trafford dugout.

The United legend is among the favourites with the bookies to succeed Amorim as head coach with former midfielder Michael Carrick also in the running.

Solskjaer spent almost three years in charge of Manchester United (caretaker and permanent) before his exit in November 2021.

The Norwegian oversaw 168 games as United boss, accumulating a 52 per cent win rate in that time.

His record reads well against that of the departed Amorim who won just 24 of his 63 games in charge, culminating in a win ratio of 31.9 per cent – the worst of any permanent United boss.

Solskjaer also led the club to a Europa League final while securing two top-three Premier League finishes.

But for now it’s Fletcher that will be tasked with improving Manchester United’s fortunes following a run of frustrating results, particularly at home.

United have won just two of their last seven games but home draws against West Ham, Bournemouth, Wolves and Leeds have scuppered their hopes of cementing a top-four place.

Instead, United sit sixth in the table and find themselves in a shootout for Champions League places alongside a stuttering Chelsea and Liverpool.

But all eyes will be on Turf Moor on Wednesday as the post-Amorim era gets underway.

Fletcher’s credentials will be severely tested early into his tenure with league fixtures against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham in the coming weeks.
