Liverpool are unlikely to re-sign Jarell Quansah this summer, talkSPORT understands.

However, the Bayer Leverkusen defender remains in their long-term thoughts.

Quansah completed a move to the Bundesliga side in July after 17 years on Liverpool’s books.

The academy graduate is understood to have a release clause worth around £52million in his Leverkusen contract.

It follows his £35million departure from Anfield last summer, which saw Quansah sign a five-year deal in Germany.

Liverpool’s defensive options

Liverpool are already preparing to welcome Jeremy Jacquet to the club in the summer.

The Frenchman finalised a move from Rennes in February ahead of joining the Reds ahead of next season.

Jacquet will be hoping to hit the ground running after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery at his current club.

Meanwhile, Giovanni Leoni is also targeting a return to action next season.

The summer signing has been sidelined since September with a torn ACL.

Quansah progressed through Liverpool’s academy after joining the club in 2008.

He would go on to make his Premier League debut aged 20 in August 2023 under Jurgen Klopp.

By the time he was sold to Leverkusen, the 23-year-old had made 58 first-team appearances.

Across those outings, Quansah scored three goals for the club from centre-back.

He was also part of the side which won the Premier League last season as well as two previous Carabao Cup triumphs.

Since joining Leverkusen, Quansah has featured on 32 occasions across all competitions, scoring four goals.

The England international also made his senior debut in November.

Thomas Tuchel handed Quansah his first Three Lions appearance in their World Cup qualifier against Albania.

It came 17 months after his first call-up under Gareth Southgate in June 2024 ahead of that summer’s Euros.

Quansah has also won the Euros at both Under-19 and Under-21 level already in his career.

talkSPORT verdict

Andy Brassell discussed the possibility of Quansah returning to Anfield last month.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, the European football journalist explained: “I wonder if at some point Jarell Quansah maybe comes back. I think that has to be a question as well.

“We’ve seen that before with players going out to the Bundesliga.

“Or do you even look at going way back, look at Dani Carvajal having his year in Leverkusen before going back to Real Madrid and becoming a Real Madrid legend. That’s always a possibility, I think.”
