Liverpool vs Newcastle United predictions and betting tips – Top-four rivals meet

Fans of both Liverpool and Newcastle United are pretty frustrated right now, at least as far as the Premier League is concerned.

The two top-four contenders have plenty of work to do to realise their shared objective.

Will Liverpool get back on track at Anfield on Saturday night, or can Newcastle get the better of the defending champions?

Liverpool vs Newcastle United predictions

The Premier League may ultimately earn five Champions League qualification spots this season, just as it did last term. Right now, though, there are only four guaranteed places at Europe’s top table for 2026/27.

Three of those look set to be claimed by Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa. Right now there is an eight-point gap between third and fourth place.

That leaves only one spot left for the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Manchester United to fight over. In this unpredictable campaign, would anyone really rule out Fulham, Brentford, Everton, Sunderland or Brighton & Hove Albion challenging as well?

Liverpool and Newcastle both have plenty of work to do, then. Arne Slot’s side long since abandoned hopes of retaining the title, and they now have a fight on their hands to merely qualify for the Champions League.

Until last weekend, Liverpool had gone 10 league games unbeaten. It did not really feel that way, though, with draws against Leeds United (twice), Sunderland, Fulham and Burnley all inducing frustration at Anfield.

That undefeated streak came to an end last time out, as Liverpool went down to a 3-2 defeat by Bournemouth.

Slot has been complaining about low blocks of late, but Bournemouth did not use that tactic. They took the game to Liverpool, storming into a 2-0 lead, and even after the Reds equalised in the second half, it was Bournemouth who pushed for the winner.

All of which means Liverpool have not won any of their last five Premier League fixtures. Slot’s job is not under immediate threat, but he cannot afford for that sort of run to go on for too long.

Newcastle have problems of their own. Although expectations are not as high at St James’ Park as they are at Anfield, Newcastle fans are still frustrated with their team’s inconsistency.

Eddie Howe’s charges won three games on the bounce in late 2025 and early 2026. But they have not won back-to-back league matches at any other stage this season.

The Magpies continue to struggle on their travels. They have won just two of 11 matches at opposition grounds and rank a mediocre 12th in the away table.

That in turn puts additional pressure on Newcastle’s home form, which makes results like last weekend’s 2-0 defeat by Aston Villa harder to take.

Both sides could do with a pick-me-up this weekend.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United betting tips

Liverpool and Newcastle United are ready to go head-to-head at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool return to winning ways?

Liverpool have not been firing on all cylinders of late, but Slot will hope his players are able to raise their game in a big match under the lights at Anfield.

Slot is right to point out that his team have struggled against teams that defend deep, although that is hardly the opposition’s fault.

Newcastle United will try to compete with Liverpool rather than set up in a low block, and that could play into the home team’s hands.

Newcastle’s recent record against Liverpool is poor. They have not beaten them in the Premier League since 2015, while you have to go all the way back to 1994 for their last top-flight success at Anfield.

There will not be much in it, but we fancy Liverpool to come out on top.

Expect plenty of action

Both Liverpool and Newcastle United are struggling to keep the back door shut.

The Reds have conceded in five of their last seven league outings, while they found it difficult to keep Bournemouth’s attack quiet last weekend.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have kept just two clean sheets in just one of their last 16 Premier League games, a poor record which is making their task of a top-four challenge even harder.

The good news for the neutrals is that the two teams’s defensive deficiencies should help make this an entertaining affair.

Ekitike one to watch

Hugo Ekitike has been a rare bright spot in this disappointing Liverpool season.

Unlike Alexander Isak, the France international hit the ground running after his summer switch to Merseyside.

Injury has limited his appearances in recent weeks, but Ekitike is in line to start when Newcastle United come to town.

The striker was on target in the reverse fixture, a 3-2 win for the Reds, and he is capable of finding the back of the net on Saturday too.
