The Lanka Premier League 2026 season is set to begin on July 17 with a repeat of the 2024 final, as defending champions Jaffna take on 2024 runners-up Galle under the lights at the SSC Ground in Colombo. The venue, which hosted its first-ever T20I during this year’s T20 World Cup, will also stage the official opening ceremony ahead of the 7:30 PM start.

The SSC will host five matches between July 17 and 19 before the tournament moves to Dambulla and Kandy. The competition will then return to Colombo, with the knockout matches and final scheduled at the R. Premadasa Stadium. A reserve day for the final has been set for August 9.

The 2026 edition will feature five teams representing Jaffna, Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Dambulla. While the official franchise identities and ownership details are yet to be confirmed, Sri Lanka Cricket is expected to announce the final branding closer to the tournament.

Player registrations opened on May 8 and will close on May 20, with direct signings allowed until May 22. Unlike the previous two seasons, which used an auction system, the 2026 edition will revert to a player draft scheduled for June 1.

The return of the draft means franchises will not be allowed to retain players from previous seasons, paving the way for major squad reshuffles. Teams must have a minimum squad size of 18 players and can expand up to 20 by adding two extra local players.

To encourage local talent development, SLC has mandated that every squad must include two Emerging Under-23 local players, with at least one required in the playing XI. Teams must also field four overseas players in every match.

The tournament’s registration guidelines briefly drew criticism after an earlier draft stated that Icon and Star category players needed a minimum of 250,000 social media followers to register. However, the clause was later removed by SLC following backlash online.

The LPL has also maintained a strong emphasis on media and fan engagement, with players facing match-fee deductions ranging from 5% to 50% for failing to meet media obligations.
