La Finalissima to be moved to Europe due to conflict in Middle East – report
The showpiece event between the winners of the Copa America and the Euros will take place in Qatar this month, as had originally been planned claim. La Finalissima was due to be held in Doha, but conflict in the Middle East has sparked speculation that it could be moved.
While the event in theory should be organised, and tickets for the event sold, the attacks launched by the United States and Israel on Iran have escalated into conflict across the Gulf, with the Iranian military targeting US military sites across the region. This has resulted in missiles landing in Qatar, and as a result, with little certainty on the end of the war, La Finalissima has been thrown into doubt.
UEFA deny venue change for La Finalissima
However on Friday morning, UEFA emitted a statement declaring it would remain in Qatar, as quoted by Diario AS.
“We are aware of the speculation surrounding the Finalissima, given the situation in the region. Discussions are ongoing with the local organizers, who have made a tremendous effort to ensure the match is a success. A final decision is expected by the end of next week.
“At this time, no alternative venues are being considered. We will not comment further until a decision has been made.”
Report: La Finalissima could be held in London
According to Cadena Cope, the game will be moved to Europe instead of Qatar. There has been some difficulty in finding free stadiums to host the game – originally Wembley was preferred, but as it is in use, Spain will likely play Argentina at the London Stadium. The Santiago Bernabeu is free, but that idea has been ruled out as it will give Spain a home advantage. It is not yet clear where the friendly with Egypt will take place, originally scheduled for the 30th of March.
RFEF President: ‘I’m convinced La Finalissima will go ahead’
Earlier in the week, speaking before Spain’s women took on Iceland, Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Rafael Louzan sent out a message of calm regarding the event.
“We’ll have news in the next few days. I’m convinced we’ll have the Finalissima, and I’m also convinced that the Spain-Egypt match, which is also scheduled, will be played,” he told TV3, as carried by Cadena SER.
Just over three weeks before La Finalissima takes place, the Qatari government have suspended all sporting events until further notice.
