John Harbaugh meeting with Giants about head coaching job

The New York Giants are getting the first bit of the proverbial apple. Former Baltimore Ravens head coach is meeting with the organization Wednesday to discuss their head coach opening, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

It’s a move that could immediately catapult the Giants back into relevancy, giving them the steady hand at coach the team desperately needs while molding its young stars Abdul Carter, Jaxson Dart, and Cam Skatterbo. With essentially every team with an opening trying to court Harbaugh it will be curious to see how far the Giants are willing to go to meet demands laid out by the Super Bowl-winning head coach.

Those demands could be a sticking point, if rumors are led to be believed. Tony Grossi of ESPN has said that the coach is seeking $20M per year, and $10M for his staff — which are easy bars to clear. However, there is a sticking point when it comes to the Giants as a potential landing spot: General manager. Grossi is saying that Harbaugh also wants authority over the roster, as well as the ability to choose his own GM.

That becomes quite tricky considering the Giants have an established GM in Joe Schoen, who is leading this search. Taking over the job in 2022, there’s been a lot of ups and downs from Schoen. He infamously let Saquon Barkley walk, only to see him win a championship with the rival Eagles — but he also orchestrated the trade for Brian Burns, and was the architect of the 2025 draft, which looks like a roaring success thus far.

If Grossi’s reporting is accurate then it will be incumbent upon Schoen to convince Harbaugh that he can be the willing assistant the coach needs, while checking his ego when it comes to roster control. If not, then the Giants will need to make a decision between Harbaugh and Schoen, with the coach being the sound pick here.

At this point you know what you’re getting with John Harbaugh: A coach capable to excelling in the regular season and taking a team on a playoff run. That would be a dream for a team like the Giants who have been lacking recent success, and they should do everything in their power to have him sign on the dotted line by the end of the day.
