Jamie Carragher apologises to Mohamed Salah in U-turn on live TV

Jamie Carragher made a U-turn over his Mohamed Salah stance by apologising to the Liverpool forward on live television.

Carragher ran back comments made towards the Egyptian on Monday following the latter’s bombshell interview at the weekend.

Salah said he had been ‘thrown under the bus’ by the club following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds on Saturday.

The 33-year-old’s outburst came after he had been named on the bench for each of the Reds’ last three Premier League matches.

As punishment for his remarks, Salah was left out of the squad for their Champions League win over Inter Milan on Tuesday.

However, he also found himself targeted by Carragher, who called his antics a ‘disgrace’ and made several personal jibes about his international record with Egypt and ill-fated tenure at Chelsea.

The Liverpool legend later escalated the feud by responding to Salah posting a cryptic selfie from the Reds’ gym ahead of kick-off.

But following his old club’s morale-boosting win in Italy, Carragher offered an olive branch on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage.

After discussing Salah’s comments, his former Fiorentina teammate, Micah Richards, turned to Carragher and asked: “Would you like to apologise to Mo, and just say sorry for any disrespect?

“It just come from passion, you’re a fan, go on, just say it down the lens.”

Carragher replied: “Mo, I apologise, I’ve upset you. I love you as the Liverpool player, but you just need to behave yourself off the pitch.”

In response to his fellow presenter’s apology, Richards held out his hand and said: “That’s fair, that looked very genuine.”

Carragher had previously described the situation surrounding Salah as a circus, and claimed he wouldn’t be back in the fold on Saturday.

Liverpool return to Premier League action against Brighton, which is Salah’s last listed club game before Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Carragher said: “I don’t think so, to be honest.

“I don’t know, sort of why you’d sort of almost bring the circus of it, whether he was on the bench, ‘is he warming up?’ the supporters, I don’t know, could it split the crowd and the manager and Mo?

“So I just think because there’s only one more game before he goes away, I think it’s probably better if he just does leave it for now and then see how the land lies when he’s back from AFCON.

“And on the back, as well, of Liverpool performing well.

“The first time we’ve really seen [Hugo] Ekitike and [Alexander] Isak together. You’d think [Florian] Wirtz’d start on Saturday as well at home to Brighton.

“I actually said a few weeks ago, Liverpool might have to build the team, while Mo Salah was at AFCON, for the future. Listen, for whatever reason, it’s happened a couple of weeks before he’s gone away to AFCON.

“But Liverpool were always going to have to find a way to get their big money signings in the team. It hasn’t happened yet, where all three have started.

Carragher claimed he loves Salah as a Liverpool player

“So I think the game against Brighton is a great opportunity to play the two strikers. Play Wirtz behind the front.

“He was on the bench tonight. He did well when he came on.

“So I think it’s the first time we might see that, and maybe what is the future of Liverpool in terms of going forward. Not just this season, probably over the next 18 months to two years.”
