Jamahl Mosley drops ‘desperation’ truth bomb after Magic’s 31-point whooping of Hornets
Head coach Jamahl Mosley pointed to urgency and “desperation” as the driving force behind the Orlando Magic’s dominant 121–90 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night, a win that secured the No. 8 seed and a first-round matchup with the Detroit Pistons.
The result came just days after Orlando suffered a 109–97 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in its first Play-In game Tuesday, leaving the team in a win-or-go-home scenario. The response was emphatic, as the Magic delivered one of their most complete performances of the season to extend their year.
“When you play with a sense of desperation and urgency, when you know you’re either going home or extending your season, that’s what it looks like,” Mosley said. “There (are) no second chances.”
Orlando set the tone early and never allowed Charlotte to recover, building a double-digit lead by halftime and continuing to apply pressure on both ends of the floor. The 31-point margin reflected a balanced effort and a level of focus that Mosley emphasized following the game.
“We did what we were supposed to do,” Mosley said. “There’s a reason we can be happy tonight. But at the end of the day, we still have more work to do.”
Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner send Magic into first-round matchup vs. Pistons

Paolo Banchero led the Magic with 25 points, six assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block, shooting 9-for-17 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free-throw line in 33 minutes. Franz Wagner added 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists, going 5-for-10 from the field and 8-for-10 from the line in 25 minutes.
“We were just relentless with that tonight. … It was just a complete effort from the whole team,” Banchero said.
“We’re going to need more of that in the playoffs,” Wagner said.
The win secured Orlando’s third consecutive postseason appearance and provided a reset after the disappointment against Philadelphia earlier in the week. The Magic’s defensive intensity and ball movement stood out against Charlotte, signaling a return to the identity that carried them through stretches of the regular season.
Orlando now shifts its focus to the postseason, where it will face the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs. Game 1 is scheduled for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
After facing elimination and responding with a decisive win, the Magic enter the playoffs with renewed momentum and a clear understanding of what is required to extend their season.
