IND vs NZ 2026: 'It is not easy to return after a break' - Former Indian all-rounder's huge claim on Rohit-Kohli's international comeback
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan noted that it is not easy for cricketers to come back after a break. However, he backed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to come out all guns blazing against the Kiwis in the upcoming three-match ODI series at home.
The first ODI is set to be played at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. Pathan, a T20 World Cup winner, backed Rohit and Kohli to use their experience and show no signs of rust while playing the ODI series against Michael Bracewell and Co.
"Now there are absolutely no questions regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. I think they will score runs in Baroda. It is not easy to return after a break, but these two are so experienced. After this series, the next ODI will take place after 6 months," Irfan Pathan said on his YouTube channel.
Rohit and Kohli last played international cricket more than one month ago. The latter won the Player of the Series award against South Africa, which India won 2-1, after aggregating 302 runs across three innings. Rohit also fared well, finishing with 146 runs in three innings at an average of 48.67.
Gill's preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup begins right now: Pathan
KL Rahul led India in the ODI series against South Africa, with regular captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer missing out due to injuries. Both Gill and Iyer have returned to the side to face the Black Caps in the three 50-over games.
While Pathan mentioned that Gill's form has been concerning of late, he described the Punjab batter as a quality player. The former all-rounder also stated that Gill's return to the XI will come at the cost of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who will have to warm the bench despite scoring a fantastic century against South Africa in the final ODI.
"Shubman Gill is not only coming after an injury, but also coming after losing his place in the T20I side. He is more comfortable in the ODI format. Sure, his average has dropped down there as well over the last few matches, but he is a solid player. Now that Gill has come in, Jasiwal has to sit out, right? Unfortunately for him, he has to miss out, but it is the captain who is returning. Gill's preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup begins right now," Pathan said.
