Shubman Gill was a notable absentee when the BCCI announced India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Not too long ago, Gill was the vice-captain of India in the shortest format. However, due to a string of disappointing performances, he had to make way for the in-form Ishan Kishan.

Gujarat Titans' head coach Parthiv Patel said that Gill was backed by the selectors and team management in T20Is as they wanted a solid player who could serve as the captain in all formats. The Punjab batter is already leading India in Tests and ODIs. However, the former India wicketkeeper noted that despite getting ample opportunities, Gill failed to deliver as expected.

"India was hoping to find a solid player who could captain in all three formats. He was given a fair chance. Maybe he did not contribute as per the expectations. There are still five games left in the New Zealand series. I think the decision was taken in the South Africa series itself. The talent pool is so much right now so there will always be talk about who is not there in the squad. Instead, I feel we should empower those who are there and put some positive energy behind them. It is a very strong squad and India will definitely start as favorites," he said on Jay Thadeshwar's podcast.

Patel, who follows domestic cricket very closely, said he has been impressed with the number of talented players in the country. He backed the Men in Blue to dominate world cricket in the years to come and win many ICC titles along the way.

"The kind of talent India has, I'll be very surprised if India does not win 75% of the ICC trophies. The way the players are playing, the way the system is, that is the most important part. I don't think a time will come when India will not win ICC trophies. The system in BCCI's COE, the domestic system, seeing all that we will dominate world cricket for many years to come," he reflected.
