Guardians’ Jose Ramirez breaks silence after landing on injured list

The Cleveland Guardians may have defeated the Detroit Tigers on Saturday by a final score of 3-1, but it was still an extremely difficult game for the team. Jose Ramirez was among three Guardians who exited the ball game due to injury, and on Sunday the star third baseman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamate fracture, the team announced. Angel Martinez and Chase DeLauter also left the contest with injuries. As for the roster moves on Sunday, Gabriel Arias was also activated from the injured list and George Valera was designated for assignment.

Ramirez commented on the injury before Sunday’s scheduled game against the Tigers (which was later postponed due to weather), per Mason Horodyski.

“I felt something out of the normal after I finished the swing, and I hear some pop, and obviously my hands start hurting, so I knew there was something off there,” Ramirez said via interpreter.

When asked about a potential timeline, Ramirez said he does not “know any timelines yet.”

An official timeline has yet to be revealed for Ramirez’s return. Some have mentioned six to eight weeks or five to seven weeks, but players have returned sooner than that in the past. In fact, Ramirez returned after only one month in 2019 after suffering a right hamate fracture. That was closer to the end of the season and the Guardians were in the middle of a postseason race, though. Cleveland will be especially cautious during the middle of the season.

Updates on Jose Ramirez’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available. Meanwhile, the Guardians will attempt to remain at the top of the American League Central standings without their best player.
