Golden Knights’ Brett Howden ‘blacked out’ after Game 5 double OT winner vs. Mammoth

The Vegas Golden Knights took a 3-2 series lead over the Utah Mammoth in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Wednesday night. After being down 2-1 in the series, the Golden Knights took Game 4 in overtime to tie the series.

In Game 5, the two teams would need a second overtime period until Brett Howden ended the game for the Golden Knights. After the game, Howden spoke about the goal, per Paul Delos Santos of NHL.com.

“I kind of blacked out there,” Howden said. “Mitch (Marner) did a really good job. It’s like the other night on PK. He did a good job of getting a stick in there, interrupting the play. Just kind of popped out, and I tried to get a shot.”

The goal was scored 5:28 into the second overtime period. Reilly Smith has been sent to the penalty box for high-sticking. After a shorthanded attempt from Jack Eichel was saved by Karel Vejmelka, a face-off in the Golden Knights’ offensive zone was taken by Howden. He won the faceoff to Mitch Marner, who got it back to Howden for the game-winner.

Howden was not the only hero of the night. After the Mammoth took a 1-0 lead in the first period, Pavel Dorofeyev scored on the powerplay to tie the game. The Mammoth took the lead again in the second period, and once again, Dorofeyev tied the game. The Golden Knights would then get a goal from Shea Theodore to take the lead into the third period. Still, Utah looked like they were going to take control of the series. Dylan Guenther and Michael Carcone both scored in the third to make it 4-3.

Dorofeyev came through one more time. He completed his hat trick with just 53 seconds left in the game to force overtime.

“I was so fired up, and good things happen when you go to the blue paint,” Dorofeyev said. “We don’t quit on the game until the final whistle, and we always help each other and just believe.”

Now the series returns to Utah for Game 6, set for Friday night.
