Giants’ Adrian Houser rips ump for botched Heliot Ramos call that led to ejection

The San Francisco Giants lost a disappointing game on Saturday to the Tampa Bay Rays. In one bizarre sequence, San Francisco’s Heliot Ramos hit a ball into the air that Giants personnel thought was a home run. It was called an out, after the ball fell into the glove of a Rays outfielder.

The Giants argued that the ball hit one of the catwalks at Tropicana Field, which should have made it a home run. San Francisco pitcher Adrian Houser and a Giants assistant coach were ejected from the game after protesting the crew chief’s call that it was out.

Houser says the crew chief was wrong.

“They got it wrong,” Houser said, per the San Francisco Chronicle. “All I was saying was, ‘That’s on you, Vic, you’ve got to see that,’ because he’s the umpire out at second. Everybody knows — they’ve been here to the Trop, everybody knows the rules — it hits the catwalk and it’s fair, it’s a homer.”

Houser was shocked that the situation didn’t end differently for San Francisco.

“You could tell from their players’ reactions, none of them reacted at all when we were stopping and saying, ‘Homer!’,” Houser said. “A Gold Glove center fielder doesn’t race up to the wall like he’s going to try to rob a home run and then run 20 feet in, and we all saw the scoreboard flash 424. It was easy to tell that ball was totally smoked, then all of a sudden goes straight down.”

The Giants are struggling this season. San Francisco is last in the National League West. The club has a 13-21 record, and got swept by the Rays after losing again Sunday.
