The Betfair Esher Novices’ Chase is an intriguing one this year with just four lined up for the Grade 2 contest.

Salver stands out from a possible value perspective after placing a respectable third behind Lulamba at Exeter on chase debut.

But he’s not shown a winning mentality like a few others should at this stage – placing in the top three in each of his last four runs.

I’d love to see him win again and it’s interesting to see him upped to 3m from 2m.

Quebecois was surprisingly ten lengths behind Doyen Quest last time out at Exeter last month despite being the 5/6 favourite.

It could well be that he needed that run, first of the season and first one after a wind op – where many say they show more progress on their second after such operation.

And the betting is not ruling out a big reverse in form with the two still fairly close in the market despite that rout.

Doyen Quest seems to prefer 3m with two wins over this kind of distance in his last two runs including on his final hurdle run before switching to fences.
