Franz Wagner’s calf injury leads to murky Game 5 status for Magic vs. Pistons
Orlando Magic star forward Franz Wagner underwent an MRI on Tuesday for his injured right calf that revealed a low-grade strain, the team announced.
Wagner sustained the injury in the fourth quarter of the Magic’s 94-88 Game 4 win at home over the Detroit Pistons on Monday night, and he will be listed as questionable for Game 5 on Wednesday in Detroit.
His availability will depend on how he responds to treatment, with league sources telling ClutchPoints that Wagner will receive “around-the-clock” treatment for his calf over the next 24 hours. How he feels on Wednesday morning and during the team’s shootaround will dictate how the Magic handles his status moving forward.
“Hopefully it’ll be better tomorrow,” Wagner said of his injury on Monday night. “The guys got it done, so that’s all that matters.”
If this injury occurred during the regular season, Wagner would likely miss at least one week’s worth of action. In the playoffs ahead of a critical road game that could determine the series, the Magic and Wagner will do everything they can to see if he can give it a go.
After winning two straight games on their home floor, the Magic now lead the 1-seed Pistons 3-1 in this first-round series, which makes Wagner’s status even more important.
A win in Detroit on Wednesday night would close out this series and send the 8-seed Magic to the Eastern Conference semifinals for the first time since 2010. That year, Dwight Howard and the Magic lost in the Western Conference Finals.
A lot is at stake entering Game 5 against the Pistons, as one win could completely shift the momentum of this series should things head back to Orlando. Whether Wagner plays or not, it is imperative that the Magic take care of business, as the longer this series goes on, the more chances Detroit has to come back from their 3-1 deficit.
Only 13 teams in NBA history have ever come back in the playoffs after trailing 3-1, most recently the Denver Nuggets in 2020, who did so in the first and second rounds of the playoffs in the NBA Bubble. Many will remember the Cleveland Cavaliers famously overcoming a 3-1 deficit in the 2016 NBA Finals, becoming the first team to ever achieve this feat in the championship series.
The Magic will monitor Wagner’s response to treatment carefully, and a final determination on his status could very well lead right up to the start of Wednesday’s game if he is able to participate in shootaround in the morning.
In this series against the Pistons, Wagner has averaged 16.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 43.9 percent from the floor. Without him, the Magic would turn to Jamal Cain, Tristan da Silva, and Anthony Black to step up off the bench next to Paolo Banchero and Desmond Bane.
