Francis Ngannou was set to face Oleksandr Usyk’s next opponent before agreeing new comeback fight
Francis Ngannou was due to return against Rico Verhoeven until Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions offered him another fight.
Ngannou agreed a mutual contract termination with MMA promotion PFL after just one fight in October 2024.

He hasn’t fought since that date, but finally announced his comeback would come on the undercard of Ronda Rousey’s return against Gina Carano on May 16.
‘The Predator’ will take on Philipe Lins in a surprise match-up on the same bill after inking a deal with promoter of the event Jake Paul.
But Ngannou revealed at the launch press conference that it wasn’t always the plan to take on Lins in his return.
“Originally, it was a big name,” Ngannou said at the press conference.
“I mean no disrespect to Philipe Lins, who is an even more dangerous opponent. But originally, it was Rico [Verhoeven].
“He [Nakisa Bidarian, MVP advisor] called me and was like, ‘Okay, what do you think about fighting Rico in MMA?’
“I’m like, damn, that sounds good. I never thought about it [before] but I thought it was a good opportunity.”
Unfortunately for Ngannou, Verhoeven was subject to alternative interest including from the UFC.
But he eventually decided to sign up to a blockbuster boxing match with unified champion Oleksandr Usyk which will take place in Egypt in May.
Ngannou knows all too well the lures of a bumper payday in the squared circle, having himself fought Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in bumper events.

Ngannou’s return – an ultimate prize of Jon Jones fight
Ngannou has forever wanted to face Jon Jones, particularly when the pair both shared prominence in the UFC heavyweight division.
The pair faced off on multiple occasions but a bout couldn’t materialise, particularly after Ngannou departed the UFC.
‘Bones’ is currently at odds with the promotion and has asked to be released on social media.
And if he beats Lins, Ngannou believes now is the time to get the job done.
He sent a new offer on social media, which read: “Watching this story unfold yesterday was very interesting.
“I have lots to say, but for now, Jonny boy, if you manage to get your freedom, then let me know.
“You deserve that $30M+ after everything you’ve done for the sport, and they should be rolling out the RED CARPET for you.”
