Former HBCU football player killed in shooting
The Mississippi football community is mourning the tragic loss of former Jackson State and Ole Miss standout Idarrious “D.D.” Bowie, who was killed in a shooting Friday evening in Rankin County, Mississippi.
Bowie, 27, was a celebrated athlete whose journey from Morton High School to both the SEC and HBCU football ranks made him one of Mississippi’s most recognizable football talents. Authorities say the shooting occurred following a disturbance at a residence, and multiple arrests have since been made as the investigation remains ongoing. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the Jackson State and Ole Miss communities, leaving former teammates, coaches, and fans grieving the loss of a player remembered for his athleticism, resilience, and impact on the field.
According to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses reported seeing a small gray vehicle leaving the scene with several individuals inside shortly after the shooting. Five people were later arrested in connection with the incident. Ladarious Harrison, 18, and Dominick Sanabria, 19, have each been charged with murder. Michael Mitchell, Semiko Crump, and Kaylee Trimble are facing charges of accessory after the fact of murder.
“Violence has no place in our community,” Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said in a statement. “This senseless act has left a family grieving and a community searching for answers. We remain committed to pursuing justice for the victim, holding those responsible fully accountable, and continuing our mission of keeping Rankin County a safe place to live, work, and raise a family.”
All five suspects appeared in court Tuesday and entered not guilty pleas. Harrison, who was already out on bond for an attempted murder charge stemming from a 2025 shooting in Rankin County, has been denied bond in connection with Bowie’s death. Sanabria, who is also charged with murder and accused of fatally shooting Bowie, was likewise denied bond. His bond hearing is scheduled for June 23.
Long before his college career, Bowie established himself as one of Mississippi’s premier football prospects. A standout at Morton High School, he earned U.S. Army All-American honors and became one of the state’s most highly recruited athletes before signing with Ole Miss. Bowie played defensive back for the Rebels during the 2017 season, appearing in nine games as a freshman. He recorded six tackles and one pass breakup while competing in the SEC.
After transferring to Jackson State, Bowie found success on the offensive side of the ball. During the 2019 season, he emerged as a productive wide receiver for the Tigers, appearing in 10 games and hauling in 35 receptions for 512 yards and five touchdowns while averaging more than 14 yards per catch.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office said the case remains active and ongoing, adding that additional arrests are possible as investigators continue working to determine whether others may have assisted the suspects after the shooting.
