FIFA actually does right thing after US denies Somali ref’s entry

The onboarding process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup encountered significant diplomatic challenges when respected Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry into the United States by customs authorities.

Upon arriving at Miami International Airport from Istanbul, Artan, the only Somali official selected by FIFA, was deemed inadmissible by Customs and Border Protection due to unspecified vetting concerns, despite holding a valid U.S. visa. This incident highlights broader entry challenges affecting the tournament, as several Iranian and Iraqi delegates also experienced intense airport detentions and admissibility issues

In response to the backlash surrounding the situation, FIFA has stepped in to address the matter and protect the referee’s livelihood. According to a report by ESPN, the governing body of world football plans to fully compensate the 34-year-old referee for the match assignments he would have officiated during the tournament.

Although FIFA President Gianni Infantino initially dismissed the growing public outcry, telling critics to “chill and relax,” internal sources confirmed that Artan will receive complete compensation, with the final amount depending on his projected game assignments.

To further alleviate the impact of this administrative exclusion, UEFA quickly honored Artan’s credentials by appointing him to officiate the upcoming UEFA Super Cup match between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League winners Aston Villa in Salzburg this August.

This compensatory measure aligns with urgent appeals from within the refereeing community. Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett publicly urged FIFA to provide Artan with a discretionary payment of $100,000, emphasizing the challenging path to reaching the elite tier of refereeing.

He noted that a payout equivalent to standard World Cup earnings is necessary to help mitigate the significant disappointment felt by Artan’s family and federation after immigration barriers took away a historic opportunity.
