Fever’s Sophie Cunningham drops truth bomb reaction to Mercury’s struggles
The Indiana Fever are starting to heat up with four straight victories. After a challenging start, it looks like the Fever, with Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell leading the way, have found their rhythm.
The same, however, cannot be said for the Phoenix Mercury. They only have four wins and own the second-worst record in the Western Conference, trailing only the Seattle Storm. They are on a four-game losing skid.
It has been a significant drop for the Mercury, especially since they had an inspired run to the WNBA Finals last season. The exit of Satou Sabally was tough, but Phoenix still has Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, Natasha Mack, and DeWanna Bonner.
Even Sophie Cunningham, who used to play for the Mercury, has found it hard to explain.
“I think I’m not the only one. I think everyone around the league truly is stunned,” said Cunningham on USA Sports.
“I am a little struck because you still have Kah, and she’s an elite-level scorer. You have AT, who knows how to put people in positions to score. Then you have DeWanna Bonner. She has been a great shooter for every team she’s been on. Not just a shooter, but a scorer in general.”

Cunningham suited up for Phoenix from 2019 to 2025 before being traded to the Fever in a four-team deal last season. She has a pretty good idea of the talent of the Mercury and the system of coach Nate Tibbetts.
She noted that there might be something simmering within the team, while also expressing cautious optimism.
“They have so many threats, and when they catch a rhythm, they’re gonna be scary. But can they get it together? It has to be sooner rather than later. The season is flying by,” added Cunningham.
Cunningham had a big game in the Fever’s victory over the Toronto Tempo on Tuesday, scoring a season-high 24 points on 6-of-7 shooting from long distance.
