Erling Haaland agrees deal to invest in shock new sports tournament with £2m prize pool

Erling Haaland has invested in a new chess tournament, which includes a £2million prize pool.

The Manchester City striker has agreed a deal to provide backing to the Total Chess World Championship Tour.

His venture is set to see fellow Norwegian and world No.1 Magnus Carlsen compete in the event.

The Guardian report that Haaland agreed to become an investor just hours before City’s last Premier League match.

It came ahead of their 1-1 draw at West Ham United on Saturday.

Haaland even wore a Norway Chess cap when entering the London Stadium prior to kick-off.

The 25-year-old has joined forces with businessman Morten Borge to form Chess Mates.

Their group will hold a significant ownership of Norway Chess in the Total Chess World Championship Tour.

Following his investment, Haaland told The Guardian: “Chess is an incredible game.

“It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football. You have to think quickly, trust your instincts and think several moves ahead.”

The first tournament in the new event is currently planned for later this year.

A full season of Total Chess World Championship Tour action is then expected to follow in 2027.

Haaland added: “I’m investing in Norway Chess because I believe the new Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the world.

“The team behind Norway Chess has already done an impressive job growing the event.”

The expected involvement of grandmaster Carlsen could prove key to their success.

Carlsen was world champion between 2013 and 2023, as well as being the current world No.1.

Haaland is not the first Premier League footballer to reveal their passion for chess.

Back in 2023, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah admitted he was ‘addicted’ to the game.

Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze scooped $20,000 (£15,000) by winning a celebrity tournament back in May.

City manager Pep Guardiola has also been known to play chess in the past.
