Eagles’ Howie Roseman does it again, Jonathan Greenard ‘flexible’ contract details surface
When news broke that the Philadelphia Eagles were trading two third-round picks for Jonathan Greenard, it felt like a massive W for the Birds.
After losing Jaelan Phillips in free agency to the Carolina Panthers on a four-year, $120 million contract, Howie Roseman added another high-end rusher to his roster and locked him up on a long-term deal, which was reportedly worth $100 million at the time.
And yet, in typical Roseman fashion, it wasn’t, in fact, a $100 million contract, but instead a two-year deal worth $60 million, as PHLY’s Zach Berman broke down on social media.
“Jonathan Greenard’s new contract registers as a two-year contract extension with $60M in new money and $50M in total guarantees, per OverTheCap,” Berman wrote. “It’s a 4-year deal for the Eagles with four additional void years, and the Eagles could get out of the deal without major dead money hits and with some cap savings before the third/fourth years. Greenard’s cap number in 2026 will be $6.278M.”
According to Over The Cap, the Eagles are really only connected to Greenard until the end of the 2027 season, with a cap savings of $1.68 million if he’s cut pre-June 1 in 2028, a savings of $19.79 million in 2029, and a savings of almost $40 million in 2030, when he will be 33.
Now granted, the Eagles probably didn’t make this signing as a short-term move. Yes, Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt are going to need extensions during his contract, and if both continue to ascend, they will likely demand big contracts of their own, but Greenard is a quality performer who can produce double-digit sacks even if his production last year was down. Still, if he becomes the next Bryce Huff, it’s interesting to see that Roseman worked contingencies into his negotiations, as it gives the Eagles maximum optionality during their Super Bowl window.
