Dodgers’ Will Smith gets 100% real on Shohei Ohtani’s start vs. Marlins

On Tuesday evening, the Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a loss against the Miami Marlins by a score of 2-1, in what was a rare quiet night for the bats in Los Angeles. Shohei Ohtani was on the mound for the Dodgers in this one, and he performed well, allowing just five hits and one earned run through six innings of work, also recording nine strikeouts on the evening.

After the game, Dodgers catcher Will Smith spoke on what he saw from Ohtani in the start.

“I thought he pitched well. His first time on normal rest, I thought he pitched well. He was mixing, he was really slowing them down there… I thought he did a good job slowing them down… he kept us in it,” said Smith, per SportsNet LA on X, formerly Twitter.

The Dodgers opted to keep Ohtani out of the hitting order in this game, marking the second time they have done that this year when he has pitched.

They sure could have used Ohtani’s hitting prowess on Tuesday night in a game in which no one could seem to get it going, with the Dodgers recording just seven hits on the evening. The one Los Angeles player who consistently found success was Smith himself, who had three hits in the game.

Despite the loss, the Dodgers are still sitting comfortably, currently in first place in the NL West with a record of 20-10, and trailing only the Atlanta Braves for the best record in baseball.

The Dodgers will next hit the field on Wednesday afternoon for their series finale against the Marlins, and will be hoping for some more success at the plate.
