Dodgers’ Mookie Betts ends Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s perfect game in weirdest way possible

In the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the Chicago White Sox, which ended in a 7-1 win on Saturday evening, it featured a great outing from pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. As the Dodgers’ win over the White Sox could’ve included potentially a perfect game from Yamamoto, a weird error from Mookie Betts ended the bid.

In the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs, Yamamoto forced Chase Meidroth to ground the ball to center on a 1-1 pitch, and as Betts was ready to scoop up the routine ball and throw to first, he couldn’t corral the ball in. It would result in an error, leading Meidroth to get to first base.

A perfect game for Yamamoto would have been a huge moment, but a no-hitter was still feasible after the error, though that would have ended with a solo home run from Tristan Peters in the ninth inning. Yamamoto would be taken out shortly after that for Los Angeles relief pitcher Alex Vesia to end the game with the blowout win.

Despite not getting the perfect game or the no-hitter, it was still a great outing from Yamamoto as he struck out seven batters, while walking zero, allowing one run and one hit. The win over the White Sox leads the Dodgers to now be 45-26 on the season, which puts them first in the NL West.

At any rate, losing the opener of the series on Saturday, Los Angeles looks to win in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon to take the series and have positive momentum going into the next slate of games against the Tampa Bay Rays, starting on Monday night.

As for Yamamoto, he prepares for his next scheduled start, which is currently slated for June 20 in the second game of the series against the Baltimore Orioles.
