Dodgers’ Max Muncy’s heartwarming reason for wanting to make All-Star team

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in their usual position as they approach the middle of June. They are in first place in the National League West, and the two-time defending World Series champions appear to have the roster to make an excellent run at a third straight title.

One of the reasons the Dodgers have a 45-26 record and an 8.5-game lead in the division over the archrival San Diego Padres has been the play of third baseman Max Muncy. The veteran infielder is slashing .262/.360/.505 with 16 home runs and 28 runs batted in. The latter figure seems somewhat small considering the number of times that Muncy has hit the ball over the fence, but it is clear that he is a major source of power.

Muncy is a prime contender to start at this year’s All-Star Game July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia for the National League, and that is something that would means quite a bit to him. “I never come into the season with personal goals,” Muncy said, per SportsNetLA. “Now that I’ve gotten a little bit older, one personal goal I did have was to make the All-Star team to be able to experience that with my kids. I would love to have them on the field with me.”

Muncy played a huge role Saturday for the Dodgers in their 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on Chicago’s South Side. He was 3 for 3 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI. Shohei Ohtani also hit his 14th home run of the season for the Dodgers.

Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but his potential gem was broken up by Tristan Peters’ home run in the ninth inning.
