David Pastrnak makes history after keeping Bruins alive vs. Sabres in Game 5
David Pastrnak was the hero, and the Boston Bruins lived to fight another day after a 2-1 overtime win in Game 5 of their first-round series against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Tuesday night.
In the process, Pastrnak — who has scored over 100 points in four straight seasons — made franchise history.
“Pastrnak scored his first career playoff overtime goal in Game 7 of the 2024 Eastern Conference First Round to eliminate the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is the first player in Boston’s history to score multiple overtime goals to stave off elimination,” wrote NHL.com’s Heather Engel afterwards.
Pastrnak took an excellent stretch pass from defenseman Hampus Lindholm before making a great move on Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon, who has been dialed in since entering the series in Game 3. But he was beaten by the Czech superstar on this occasion.

It was Pastrnak’s 41st career playoff goal, which moves him into seventh place in Bruins history, passing Johnny Bucyk, per Engel.
“We’re neighbors and we always call it the neighbor connection,” Pastrnak said of Lindholm, who he has been teammates with since March of 2022. “No, it’s just great. Great eyes. Seems like anytime he has the puck and I have an opening, I have the confidence that he’s going to find me. We have the chemistry so it’s fun, and happy that we connected today.”
Although his last playoff overtime goal came in a Game 7, this one was of critical importance to keep the Bruins alive in the series. They’ll now head back to TD Garden with momentum, and a chance to force another winner-take-all seventh game.
They’ll need to be much better than they have been on home ice if they hope to extend the matchup. Boston lost both games at TD Garden, being outscored 9-2.
The two Atlantic Division rivals will get an extra day of rest as the series shifts from Western New York to Massachusetts. Game 6 is set for just past 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday night, and Pastrnak will look to keep scoring big goals to help his team continue the comeback bid.
