Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer reveals George Pickens expectation for mandatory minicamp
The Dallas Cowboys have taken part in OTAs this week, but wide receiver George Pickens has not been present. As for the mandatory minicamp, which is set to take place in two weeks, Brian Schottenheimer says that he expects Pickens to be there, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.
“I expect he’ll be here,” Schottenheimer said. “I think he’s in a good spot, but, again, I know he’s handling his business. I know he misses his teammates, [and] we miss him too. You know how we feel about him. We love him. This is just part of the business.”
Pickens signed the $27.3 million franchise tag tender in the offseason as the Cowboys noted that they wouldn’t sign him to a long-term deal.
If the wide receiver doesn’t report to training camp, he will be fined for every day he isn’t there. Last season, Micah Parsons didn’t report to OTAs, but showed up to minicamp with low back tightness. He was then traded to the Green Bay Packers.
Though it would be key for Pickens to be there for his team during voluntary camp, Schottenheimer believes that he’s doing the right things to make sure he’s ready to get on the field.
“This time of year, where these guys are training, the workouts are a little bit longer,” Schottenheimer said. “It’s actually more about the strength and weight room program than even football, quite honestly, working through Phase 1 and Phase 2. I’ve always believed this — and this has got nothing to do with a single player — how do you prove to your teammates that you’re doing everything in your power to be the best version of yourself if they don’t see you doing it? I have no question George is preparing, just like I had no questions what Micah was doing or whoever.”
