Connor McDavid, Jason Dickinson get official injury designations for Oilers-Ducks Game 5
The Edmonton Oilers may have gone into a 3-1 hole against the Anaheim Ducks after losing Game 4, but no fans of the team were panicking just yet because of their ability for the superstars to turn it on and rally back. However, after Connor McDavid and Jason Dickinson missed the morning skate with apparent injuries, Oilers fans might have an excuse to start looking for the panic button. It’s going to be a long night waiting for puck drop, according to Elliotte Friedman via X, formerly Twitter.
“EDM coach Kris Knoblauch says Connor McDavid and Jason Dickinson are game-time decisions,” Friedman reported.
The concerning part for the Oilers making this designation is that they are openly admitting that their captain has an injury. They have been playing very coy ever since McDavid left a game earlier in the series after a collision with Mattias Ekholm, but they’ve never admitted there was something wrong. For them to make this public, it has to be something serious enough that they couldn’t hide it.
It might have been a secret for a couple of games, but there was really no hiding it after the superstar played only 19:32 in Sunday’s overtime loss. McDavid regularly plays 22-25 minutes per night in meaningless regular season games, so playing those types of minutes in a game that went to overtime is concerning.
The Oilers’ depth has been hurting enough with Dickinson out of the lineup for a couple of games in these playoffs. He has two goals and an assist in two games, and if he misses this game along with McDavid, it could be too great a hole to climb out of.
