Chris Demarco reveals Sabrina Ionescu plan for return from back injury

The New York Liberty are about to get a huge boost in their next game. Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu will make her return on Sunday against the Mystics after a lengthy injury absence. However, New York plans to take it slow with their star player in the hopes of keeping her around for the rest of the season.

Liberty head coach Chris DeMarco said before Sundays’ game that Ionescu will be on a minutes restriction against the Mystics, per The Athletic’s Annie Costabile.

Ionescu has only played in one game this season before being sidelined with a back injury. She also dealt with a lingering ankle injury that she picked up during the preseason.

The star point guard had a decent performance in her lone outing so far this year. She logged 11 points, five rebounds, and seven assists in 31 minutes against the Wings on May 24th.

It will be interesting to see how many minutes Ionescu plays against the Mystics. New York has been in good hands with Pauline Astier and Marine Johannes filling in at point guard. That could make coach DeMarco comfortable significantly limiting Ionescu’s minutes, especially if New York jumps out to an early lead.

Either way, the Liberty have a lot of play for during Sunday’s matchup.

New York enters Sunday’s game at 9-4 on the season and 4-0 in Commissioner’s Cup matchups. If the Liberty can take care of the Mystics, they will secure their place in the Commissioner’s Cup. That should add another level of stakes for New York.

Liberty vs. Mystics tips off at 3PM ET from Barclays Center in New York.
