Chiefs’ Andy Reid doesn’t want LT Josh Simmons to add ‘cheeseburger weight’

Pop superstar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce are officially getting married at Madison Square Garden, which prompted head coach Andy Reid to make a classic cheeseburger joke about fitting into his tuxedo. In a conversation with Stephen A. Smith, the veteran coach humorously mentioned that he has cut back on his favorite meal in order to be able to attend the high-profile celebrity wedding in style.

While Reid can joke about his own diet, he maintains a completely different standard for his players’ conditioning.

According to a report from NBC Sports, Reid is closely monitoring the physical development of second-year left tackle Josh Simmons. The 6-foot-5 offensive lineman raised eyebrows after revealing that he currently weighs between 285 and 290 pounds, making him exceptionally lean and possibly the lightest offensive tackle in the entire NFL.

Although Simmons has expressed a strong desire to bulk up to 300 pounds before training camp, Reid has made it clear that he does not want the young lineman to gain any unnecessary “cheeseburger weight.” The veteran coach praised Simmons as a unique and highly athletic player with elite strength and excellent natural leverage, which allowed him to successfully block larger defenders last season despite his lighter frame.

Simmons originally weighed 317 pounds at the scouting combine before being drafted in the first round, but Andy Reid insists that exceeding 300 pounds is not an absolute requirement, emphasizing that proper functional health is far more important than arbitrary numbers on a scale.

Maintaining an optimized offensive line is crucial as the franchise prepares to protect its half-billion-dollar investment at quarterback. Reid provided an encouraging update on superstar Patrick Mahomes, who is diligently rehabbing from a torn ACL he suffered late last season. The head coach praised Mahomes’ work ethic, noting that his recovery has been a steady progression and that the franchise player is on track to participate in training camp.
