Cardinals rumors: What St. Louis wants to ‘upgrade’ before MLB trade deadline
The St. Louis Cardinals are in an interesting spot. While they entered the season in a rebuild, the Cardinals have upset expectations up to this point. So, will the Cardinals stay committed to the rebuild, or will they decide to buy at the trade deadline? MLB insider Ken Rosenthal said the Cardinals will not “ignore the standings.” Rosenthal then revealed that the Cardinals want to “upgrade” their pitching, via Foul Territory.
“They traded (Brendan) Donovan (this past offseason), they traded him with two years of control because they are trying to upgrade their pitching,” Rosenthal said. “(Lars) Nootbaar could be another player who helps them upgrade their pitching.”
Nootbaar has been mentioned as a trade candidate. Moving from Nootbaar would not guarantee that the Cardinals are rebuilding, though. It could simply be a move to get a pitcher or two. The Cardinals could still end up buying before the MLB trade deadline.
The ball club has decisions to make. Their performance over the next month and a half will go a long way toward determining their trade deadline plans. At the moment, St. Louis holds a 37-29 record which is good for second place in the National League Central standings. The Cardinals also hold the top spot in the National League Wild Card standings.
Their situation can obviously change in a few weeks, but right now one has to imagine the Cardinals are seriously considering the idea of buying before the trade deadline.
For now, St. Louis is focused on its upcoming game against the Minnesota Twins at 8:10 PM EST.
