Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich predictions

After a slight wobble following the winter break, Bayern Munich will have the Bundesliga title within reach if they beat Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

A home defeat by Augsburg and a draw away to Hamburg last month saw Bayern open the door to Borussia Dortmund, who duly closed the gap over the course of a six-match winning streak.

However, Bayern edged further clear of their rivals last weekend thanks to a 3-2 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, with Dortmund only managing a 2-2 draw with RB Leipzig.

A point at the Red Bull Arena is not a bad result in isolation, especially as Fabio Silva equalised for Dortmund in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time.

But because Bayern are setting such a relentless pace at the summit of the standings, any slip-up – however minor – is a blow to Dortmund’s title chances. 

So, the state of play: going into this weekend’s Der Klassikker, Bayern lead Dortmund by eight points.

A win for the hosts at Signal Iduna Park would therefore keep the title race alive, but anything less would surely leave Niko Kovac’s team with too much to do with just 10 rounds of fixtures remaining.

It is fair to say Dortmund’s preparation for Saturday’s seismic showdown was less than ideal. 

They arrived in Italy on Wednesday holding a two-goal aggregate advantage over Atalanta at the midway point of their Champions League knockout phase play-off.

Dortmund were in pole position to advance to the round of 16, yet they threw it all away. A 4-1 defeat, with Atalanta’s winning goal coming deep into second-half stoppage time, dumped Kovac’s men out of the competition.

That loss has piled the pressure on BVB ahead of Saturday. Given they are already out of the DFB-Pokal, the Bundesliga provides their last remaining chance of silverware. But defeat by Bayern would in effect close off that avenue too.

A draw would not be a bad result for the league leaders, but it is not really in the nature of Vincent Kompany’s charges to play for a point.

Bayern have got back on track since those five dropped points in January, winning three games on the spin including that 3-2 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt. 

Having had a full week to prepare for this match, it is no surprise to see Bayern classed as clear favourites by the bookies.

Bayern to make statement

All things considered, Borussia Dortmund have had a pretty good season in the Bundesliga up to now.

Like Bayern, they have only lost one game so far. The difference between the two teams is that Dortmund have drawn four more and won four fewer games than Bayern.

BVB have often been accused of being flaky, but that has not been the case in the league this term.

At the same time, they are not in Bayern’s class. There is no shame in that given the financial discrepancy between the pair, but Dortmund do not quite have Bayern’s star power.

With Kompany’s side likely to go all-out for the win, Bayern should take a giant step closer to the title on Saturday.

If you had been offered a season ticket at any ground in Europe at the beginning of 2025/26, the Allianz Arena would have been a fine choice. 

Goals have not been in short supply in Bayern Munich matches this term, with the Bavarians scoring most of them.

Dortmund have only conceded one more goal than Bayern, but the league leaders have outscored Kovac’s side by no fewer than 36 strikes.

Remarkably, there have been over 3.5 goals in 74 percent of Bayern’s league games this season. Expect that percentage to nudge up slightly after this trip to Signal Iduna Park.

Harry Kane has been one of the most reliable centre-forwards in world football for a number of seasons now.

But even by the England international’s own high standards, this season is set to be a record-breaking one.

Kane already boasts 43 goals in all competitions. He needs only two more for a career best, but he is unlikely to stop once he reaches that milestone. Kane doubtless has the 60-goal mark in his sights.

Bayern Munich’s frontman can move closer to that tally by making the net bulge against Borussia Dortmund in this weekend’s crunch clash in the Bundesliga.
