Blackburn match abandoned for second time this season to deny them three points again

Blackburn have cruelly fallen victim to poor weather yet again as their Championship clash with Sheffield Wednesday was abandoned.

Rovers were leading the Owls 1-0 at Ewood Park and were on course to pick up all three points against the lowest-ranked side in the division.

It was Yuki Ohashi who broke the deadlock in 33rd minute which had the hosts on their way to their first league victory since November 21.

But for the second time this season, they were subject to a match being scrapped due to a waterlogged pitch when leading.

In almost identical fashion, Blackburn saw their September tie against Ipswich called off in 80th minute at Ewood Park for the same reason.

That game had to be replayed in full, with the Tractor Boys nicking a point after scoring an equaliser in the 94th minute midweek.

Saturday’s clash with Wednesday didn’t last as long as their initial tie with Ipswich, with referee Ruebyn Ricardo calling the players off in the 60th minute due to the wet surface.

Wet and wild

And after over ten minutes of deliberation, the decision was made to call off the match – much to the dismay of the home supporters.

A Blackburn statement said: “Match abandoned.

“The referee has called off the contest due to a waterlogged pitch.”

Wednesday meanwhile posted on social media: “The match officials have abandoned the game.

“Thank you to everyone who came to Ewood Park to back us today and please stay safe on your way home in these conditions.

“Details on the rearranged fixture will be communicated in due course.”

It now remains to be seen whether the match will be replayed in full, which would be a further blow to Blackburn.

And talkSPORT understands that the EFL will discuss the rescheduling of the match on Monday.

It took over two months for Blackburn’s home clash with Ipswich to be rescheduled, with both teams surely hoping it doesn’t take as long this time around.

Blackburn could have leapfrogged above Sheffield United and Charlton into 17th spot with victory over Wednesday.

For the visitors, they remain rooted to the bottom of the table on minutes ten points having been hit with another points deduction earlier in the week.
